traditional photographic process and technique
andrew koltek is a multi-format photographer, musician, and accountant from new westminster, bc. he makes a studio of our natural and built environments, and a darkroom from his apartment bathroom.
born in winnipeg, manitoba, andrew grew up in the pacific northwest (bc, washington, oregon). his perspective is shaped by previous studies in radical sociology (sfu), training as a professional accountant (ubc / cpabc), and work in industrial environments.
andrew uses the technical practice of photography to mediate perception, and shape a present and particular ‘way of seeing’. through careful study of photographic processes, andrew situates himself as a modern student of the traditional crafts(wo)men that have defined photography’s history as art.
his work honestly reflects the material conditions of its production:
dust and scatches convey the reality of negatives hung to dry in a shower, and then scanned at a desk next to his bed. these imperfections serve to remind the viewer that they're looking at an artifact of a physical and chemical process,
rather than simply binary figures translated from light.
